Letting go

‘The Art of Letting Go’ is an artistic investigation into nature and the patterns of decomposition in the human body. The project was centered around the figure St. Francis whose body is ‘incorruptible,’ according to Catholic teaching. The importance of nature and human suffering are central to his teachings.

I designed a mini-pilgrimage for visitors to the Museum of Religious Art (Uden). The route represented the martyrdom of St. Francis: the various stages of his decomposition were juxtaposed with the daily suffering of natural elements. The hope is that the visitor experiences a certain beauty in this suffering. The mini-pilgrimage was an interactive experience; the visitor could listen (via an iPod) to specific bird sounds that accompanied Saint Francis during his life.

Below you can watch a video on this project, made by Josjah Kunkeler.
