I was artist-in-residence for two months at MILK Studios, which is located in the heart of Amsterdam’s Red Light District. My project was a comprehensive study of the many representations of Mary Magdalene.
I collected over 500 examples from art history, (pop) music, movies, fashion, and from everyday life. I also traveled to Seville, Spain, and Dublin, Ireland, to study various interpretations of Mary Magdalene. I categorized the information into 10 unique typologies, which were displayed on 15 windows using 196 images. The images were accompanied by hand-written facts, statistics, data and original biblical quotations on the windows.
The exhibition ran from November 1 to December 7, 2014. In addition, I delivered several lectures on my research. The project was supported by De Vermeulen Brauckman Stichting, Prins Bernhard Cultuurfonds and the AFK.
